“CONFETTI”

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE
Japan | Drama | 2024 | 80 minutes | In Japanese w/English subtitles

DIRECTOR: Naoya Fujita

STARRING: Shion Matsufuji, Jun Saito, Sara Hayama, Hinako Saeki, Hirona Murata, Reiko Takashima, Toru Kizu

SYNOPSIS:

Fujita Naoya’s feature debut, Confetti is a fresh, sweet-spirited take on the venerable seishun eiga (youth film) genre. The setup of a boy transferring to a Tokyo middle school is a genre staple, but almost everything else about the film, based on an original script by Kaneko Suzuyuki, is not. The protagonist, Yuki (Matsufuji Shion), plays female roles for his father’s traveling taishu engeki (popular theater) troupe.

Reflecting director Fujita’s extensive research, Confetti is an informed and sympathetic look at a theatrical genre that doesn’t get a lot of critical respect, but still moves and amuses Japanese audiences in ways that seem little changed since Tokyo was Edo. So give Fujita, Matsufuji and company a well-deserved confetti shower.

Director’s Statement

“I had a wonderful opportunity to work with Shion Matsufuji, Jun Saito, Sara Hayama. Those three fresh and powerful casts have influenced me and affected me every day throughout the shooting process. I am sure each of their characteristics are strongly reflected to the screen. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Japan Culture and Taishu Engeki Association for their interviews and precious experience, as well as the theatre performance troupe Gekidan Mimatsu for their cooperation to produce this film. I hope this story of the youth, as well as the culture of theatre will reach many people through this film. I am thankful for being able to produce the film with a great help from wonderful casts and staffs.”
