Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with Chicago Asian Pop-Up Cinema! Join us for a free with screening of “The Midsummer’s Voice”, a coming-of-age film about teenage Peking Opera performers.
Prior to the screening of the film — Susanna Sun, who is a Ph.D. student studying East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Theatre and Performance Studies at The University of Chicago, will conduct an in-person 20-minute presentation about Peking Opera.

SYNOPSIS:
Sun Xiaolei, a Peking Opera student, is facing his first life-changing competition, but his delayed voice change might jeopardize everything. Fortunately, during this anxiety-inducing preparation period, he unexpectedly befriends two competitors - the tomboyish girl Shi Jiahui and the rebellious “Nepo baby,” Xie Tianci. Together, these three young adults navigate the “voice change” of adolescence during a transformative summer.
Director Bio: Yudi Zhang
Graduated from the University of Southern California. The short film was nominated for the Florida Film Festival, and the Newport Beach Film Festival.
The short film “The Midsummer’s Voice” won the Special Jury Award-Best Live-Action Short Under 15 Minutes for Palm Springs International Film Festival, and was nominated for the Cork International Film Festival, Philadelphia International Film Festival, Hangzhou Youth Film Program, etc.
The feature film “The Midsummer’s Voice” won the first venture capital award at the FIRST International Film Festival, and won “China’s Good Story” award at the China Golden Rooster & Hundred Flowers Film Festival.
