SYNOPSIS:
After losing his hearing, former sharpshooter Gu Xuebing takes a job as a security guard at a factory. When he catches his neighbor’s son stealing scrap metal, Xuebing takes the young man under his wing. However, as poverty rears its ugly head in the industrial town, it’s hard to resist turning to crime.
Capturing the desperation of those who were left behind by China’s rapid economic reforms, Gao Peng’s slick directorial debut brilliantly combines a hard-boiled crime drama with social commentary. The engrossing film shows a pressure cooker society that, like Xuebing’s homemade gun, can go off at any time.
