SYNOPSIS:
In 1909, several years after Korea is forced into becoming a Japanese colony, freedom fighters — led by the heroic Ahn Jung-geun — plot the daring assassination of Japan’s prime minister in the Chinese city of Harbin during their quest for independence.
Woo Min-ho, the director of blockbusters Inside Men and The Man Standing Next, turns one of the most important events in modern Korean history into a masterfully taut and handsomely mounted spy thriller. Most importantly, it’s a stark reminder that the fight for freedom is a long and difficult road that can only be completed in solidarity.
Woo Min-ho, Director
Director Woo Min-ho, known for his insightful observation into the times, has helmed films such as Inside Men, The Drug King, and The Man Standing Next, earning praise as a visionary filmmaker who interprets the future through the lens of the past. In particular, his unique critical yet realistic storytelling ability and keen insight have captured the raw face of South Korea on screen through the most cinematic expression. This time, he turns his attention to the year 1909. Although many movies have covered this era, his earnest desire to tell the story of Ahn Jung-geun and the independence fighters as authentically as possible is evident in the painstakingly crafted film. “We couldn’t film the story of independence fighters in front of a green screen. I wanted to fully immerse in their spirit and struggles on real locations,”he explained, highlighting the dedication to recreating 1909 faithfully in Harbin. Through Woo Min-ho's perspective, Harbin will shine a light on diverse characters and offer a chance to reflect on the present era.
