MAKING WAVES MONTREAL 2023 ANNOUNCES FULL LINEUP FOR THEIR INAUGURAL EDITION

Montreal, September 21st , 2023 – MAKING WAVES MONTREAL (MWM) announces its inaugural edition lineup, running between October 20th and October 22nd in Montreal. The programme will feature six feature-length films, all with their Montreal premieres. This season’s special guests attending with their films include actress Jennifer Yu & Lam Chin-Ting, actor Wong You-Nam and director Kelvin Shum.
Making Waves will open on Friday, October 20th, 7:00 PM with a screening of OVER MY DEAD BODY from director Ho Cheuk-Tin. This dark humor tale of a group of irresponsible neighbors who discover a dead body and mayhem is unleashed when they cannot make up their minds what to do with it. Hosted by co-stars Jennifer Yu and Wong You-Nam.
On Saturday October 21st, 4:00 PM the Showcase’s lead film is LONELY 18, directed by Tracy Choi, a story of two best friends who enter the entertainment industry during the golden age of 1980s Hong Kong. Fate propels them to different levels of success over the next decades. Featuring new and veteran actors from different eras of Hong Kong cinema including legendary kung fu star Ti Lung and Loletta Lee. Hosted* by lead actress Lam Chin-Ting.
At 7:00 PM, IN BROAD DAYLIGHT follows an investigative report into abuse at a care home for the disabled. After the film, actress Jennifer Yu, playing the protagonist, will be on hand for a Q&A session with the audience.
At 9:30 PM, a screening of DELIVERANCE, about four siblings who reunite 15 years after their mother’s death and use unorthodox methods to recall some haunting memories from that time. Starring award-winning Simon Yam (ELECTION) and one of the final performances of veteran actor Kenneth Tsang (John Woo’s THE KILLER). Hosted by director/co-writer Kelvin Shum.
On Sunday October 22nd at 1:00 PM, Director Ka Sing Fung’s LOST LOVE is about a couple who rediscovers the good, bad and beauty of parenting new foster kids after losing their beloved young son. Starring famous singer/actress Sammi Cheng (INFERNAL AFFAIRS) who won the Hong Kong Film Critics Society’s Best Actress Award.
To close the festival at 3:30 PM, THE NARROW ROAD by director Lam Sum tells the story of Chak, who barely makes ends meet at his cleaning company until he takes former thief Candy and her adorable daughter under his wing. But things take unexpected turns despite their best intentions and as they struggle through the pandemic with careful optimism. THE NARROW ROAD was the opening film of the Hong Kong International Film Festival before doing its world tour.
Presented by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, in collaboration with Asian Pop-Up Cinema in Chicago, sponsored by Create Hong Kong and supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Toronto, the selection promises to showcase a new generation of Hong Kong filmmakers breaking new ground by moving away from martial arts-action flicks and instead telling culturally relevant and stylistically sophisticated stories.
