SYNOPSIS
The bustling, modern megalopolises of China contrast greatly with the country's southeast coastal, rural region of Chaoshan, stuck in time as women are bound socially and traditionally to marriage, mothering, and family life. The struggle is all too real as they obsessively cling to the joys of home life while increasingly confronting grief as their grown children depart to lead contemporary lives in big cities.
Meet Zekai, who has been dating Jing Shan for two years. They are working in Shenzhen where they live a happy life with no plans to marry. However, his mother, who lives in Shantou, does not know that Zekai already has a girlfriend and kept searching for a suitor for him, even arranging for someone to come to Shenzhen to meet Zekai. As a result, Zekai brings Jing Shan home to meet his mother. The pending homecoming visit is filled with apprehension for the couple as Jing Shan is a divorcee.
This is a story about parents in the rural areas coming to terms with their children's choices of moving away and being absent from the old way of life.
