LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATORY FREE SCREENING

SUCCESSOR (抓娃娃)
February 2 At Chicago Cultural Center

CHICAGO, IL – January 6, 2025 – Asian Pop-Up Cinema (APUC) proudly presents a free screening celebrating 2025 Lunar New Year with China’s highest grossing 2024 summer blockbuster, SUCCESSOR (抓娃娃), a dark satire comedy on Helicopter Parents for this Year of the Snake on Sunday, February 2 in the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E Washington).

In Asian culture, the Snake is associated with transformation, renewal, and spiritual growth. Snakes are known for their ability to shed their skin, symbolizing the process of letting go of the old and embracing the new.

In SUCCESSOR, Shen and Ma play a high-powered couple that own a successful business and are determined to groom their son Ji-ye to take over the company. Worried that he will turn into a useless rich kid, they decide to raise him in something resembling poverty so that Ji-ye could develop qualities such as hard work, knowledge, careful budgeting, physical fitness, and perseverance.

Directed by Fei Yan and Da-Mo Peng and co-stars Shen Teng and Ma Li — the comedic duo behind previous smash hits “Goodbye, Mr. Loser” (2015) and “Hello, Mr. Billionaire” (2018), “the film has also touched a nerve in China with its tale of wealthy, controlling “tiger parents” that fuses elements of the hit HBO show “Succession” with the 1998 comedy feature “The Truman Show”- Sixthtone.com
